Singer and bad boy Justin Bieber’s wild night in Miami-Dade could get some local police officers in trouble.
The Opa-locka police department this week launched an internal investigation into why two or more of its officers - possibly on duty and in marked vehicles - escorted Bieber and his entourage from the city’s airport to several party spots, including a strip club.
Assistant City Manger David Chiverton on Wednesday confirmed the probe is underway. The investigation was first reported on TMZ, an entertainment website.
“We know it was an unauthorized detail,” Chiverton said of the police escort for the embattled hearthrob. “We are trying to determine where the authorization for the officers to escort Mr. Bieber came from, where he was escorted and how many of our officers were involved.”
It’s unclear if any of the officers were on duty at the time.
Bieber spent the Martin Luther King holiday in Miami-Dade and made several stops, largely chronicled via social media. His visit had already made news because he had allegedly spent $75,000 at the strip club.
After visiting Mansion in Miami Beach Monday evening, the embattled pop prince visited King of Diamonds Gentleman’s Club at 17800 NE Fifth Ave. to celebrate the 30th birthday of friend, Lil Scrappy.
“Justin Bieber is at @KOD_miami strip club in Miami and just ordered 75K in dollar bills,” read a post on the North Miami Beach establishment’s Twitter feed.
But that was an exaggeration, the club owner said Wednesday.
“Justin Bieber didn’t spend $75,000,” said club owner Ricky “Disco Rick” Taylor, during an appearance on The Andy Slater Show Wednesday afternoon on sports radio on WINZ-940 AM.
“First of all, he stayed for an hour,” Taylor said. “If he dropped $75K, he’d have been here for three or four hours.”
Chiverton said the probe into the officers role in the escort detail is still underway. No action has been taken by the city.
